Making money on the Internet is a hot topic these days, especially with so many people unemployed. A search for “making money on the Internet” brings back about 313,000 results. There are tons of programs, courses, e-books, blogs and websites for this topic. There are many “get rich quick” scams out there, so how do you tell the scams apart from the real opportunities? You simply look for the ones that don’t say a single thing about being rich while you sleep or anything along the lines of that. The sad thing is that many people fall prey to the vultures that do nothing but pull information – gathered for free – from the Internet, put it together, slap it into a pretty package and then sell it with false promises of overnight wealth. It is very possible to earn a healthy living from the Internet, but it will require some time and effort. There are two main ways of using the Internet to make money.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a term that is almost everywhere you look on the Internet, which means it is king of familiar, yet so many people have no idea what the real meaning is. Affiliate marketing is basically just Internet based sales, with a bit of a twist. Your pay is usually only commission based, but if you research various products and services to find the right ones, you can make a nice earning rate. There are some websites that compile a database of companies that allow affiliate promotion of certain products, but sometimes these websites charge a fee for access. This is really a rip off because you can access this information all on your own. All you have to do first is figure out which type of product and/or service that you would like to promote, based on the market popularity. Then you can search using the type of product as keywords. Locate a few of the top companies that represent these products and visit the websites. If the companies offer an affiliate program, there will be a small link at the bottom of the web page. Click this link and sign up. When you join a company’s affiliate program, you are often given customized tools that can help you in your marketing efforts, like code for product images and banner ads. You are also given a custom referral link. When you use this link in your website or blog text, customers can click it and be directed to the sales page for the product. The company tracks your custom ID and when a customer purchases through your link, you get the commission payment. Most companies provide between 15% and 30%, depending on what the product or service is.

Professional Freelancing

Professional freelancing is quite similar to sub-contracting. For payment, either one-time or ongoing, you perform certain tasks for a company or person that is looking to outsource (hire) for certain projects without actually having to keep an employee on a full-time basis. You can customize what you do. For example, if you have experience with website design, you can be a freelance website designer. If you have content writing experience or journalistic experience, you can become a content ghostwriter, which means that you are researching and writing various things that will be adding to the Internet through websites, article directories, and blogs. The professional freelancing market is an extremely competitive one, so it is important to make sure that you have a pronounced amount of experience. If you know what you’re doing but can’t prove your experience, the best thing for you to do is sign up for one or two freelance job sites that will provide you with access to hundreds of projects and help you establish yourself in the market. Pay varies; when you have more experience under your belt, you can average about $15 per 500 words.

There is no shortage of Affiliate programs out there. Among the thousands and thousands, there is bound to be a few that can work for you. Most Affiliate marketers will tell you that finding the right program is all about testing them. This is only part of the equation, and comes almost last.

First, you should decide on a niche. The niche group is the group that categorizes the purpose of a product. Niche groups are found at every level, from two general to way too specific. Choose a niche group that falls somewhere in the middle. Ideally, you want a niche that has a high demand and a small amount of competition. It is a good idea to choose an Affiliate program in a niche that you either have experiences with or are interested in. This keeps you motivated and helps ensure your success.

Look for Affiliate programs that are comprehensive and well designed. You should have support if needed, and you should understand the Affiliate programs. Many Affiliate programs have started providing access to the products for Affiliates so that they can give a fair evaluation of what they’re trying to promote. Other Affiliate programs offer discounts or time-limited one time access.

Affiliate programs should provide you with a supply of promotional aids. This too varies. On a basic level, all Affiliate programs provide banner ads to use on your website and blog. More comprehensive Affiliate programs will give you access to other tools like pre-written ads and newsletters to use for email marketing. A few select Affiliate programs offer their Affiliates access to free websites and/or sales pages.

Another important factor is the commission. This one is usually a big determining factor, whether intentionally or not. Obviously, you will want competitive commission pay. When you consider what is competitive, think about your costs and compare how much you would have to earn to turn a profit. In this business, when you come across Affiliate programs that provide 75% commission or higher, take a close look at the product. Chances are good that there is no real demand for it.

Consider your customers. Many Affiliates fail quickly because customers aren’t happy with their purchase. Some Affiliate programs will deduct returns and refunds from your commissions. Others have strict return policies on the customer side and do not penalize Affiliates for returns.
You should also find out if there are certain restrictions placed on the commissions that you earn. In some cases, when you sign up you might agree to a minimum amount of earnings. There are also some Affiliate programs that restrict how much commission you can earn in a certain period of time. Make sure that you are checking each Affiliate program for any mention of these restrictions before you start putting in the promotional effort.

Not all Affiliate programs are the same. The general structure is almost universal. It is similar but the details of the programs differ. Always pay attention to the details, no matter how small they may seem to you, and read the fine print. It is important to know the ins and out of the Affiliate programs completely.

Affiliate marketing can be rather tricky to figure out when you are new to the idea. Not many people understand that Affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick thing and actually requires time, money and/or effort. This is the reason why many people fail at their attempts to make an Affiliate marketing campaign successful. Affiliate marketing software has become something of a necessary aid for new marketers.

The main goal of an Affiliate marketing software program is to save you time while adding an element of convenience. In this business, your time is very valuable. Wasted time in one area takes away from the time that you could be spending on other important areas. Affiliate marketing software can help on many levels.

Affiliate marketing software can help you with a few aspects of your campaigns. First, the proper software can help you choose additional products that are related to your business. This can help cut back on the endless hours you could easily spend looking for what’s available.

An Affiliate marketing software program can also do some research for you. Many versions work to comb the Internet looking for products, but they can also help with keyword suggestion. As you know, keywords are important aspects of content creation and making your web pages visible to search engines. Having an Affiliate marketing software program that helps with your keyword research is another time saver.

It is also just as important to choose Affiliate software that generates specific reports for you on demand. In Affiliate marketing, there are certain statistics that you must monitor regularly. Tracking your sales is just a portion of it. You also need to know your page rankings, click through rates, and page hits. If you can have a software program compile this information for you, you gain time and convenience.

When you are choosing Affiliate marketing software, think about the things that the software provides. What features does the software have? Does the software offer any kind of support or does it just leave you to figure things out on your own? It is important, especially while you are still learning the ropes, to have some kind of support from the software that you choose, and you shouldn’t have to pay $9.99 an hour for it either. Always consider the support for those “just in case” moments.

The most basic Affiliate marketing software that you should keep your eyes open for are related more towards managing your Affiliate business. You will need some kind of program that tracks your keywords. You will also need blogging software if you choose to start a blog (which is highly recommended). There are many different kinds of software that are available for Affiliate marketers. You simply need to choose the ones that work the best for you. You want reliability and you want a software program that is going to do what it says it does, especially if you wind up buying the software instead of using free versions.

Over the last few years, Affiliate marketing has exploded in popularity. Before the recession, Affiliate marketing was growing quickly, but with unemployment rates consistently increasing people soon started thinking outside the box and looking for ways to earn an income from their home. If you learn how to execute an Affiliate marketing campaign properly, it is quite possible for you to be successful. Here are some tips for you to think about.

1. Time

Despite many claims to the contrary, Affiliate marketing cannot make you rich overnight. There is quite a bit of preparation and regular work that is required to be successful. This is one of the biggest mistakes that people do; they believe that you can get something for nothing. While the idea is the fruit of many people’s dreams, the reality is that an Affiliate marketing campaign is going to take some effort; unless of course you hire someone to do everything for you and pay them mere peanuts (don’t do that, by the way). Right from the start you need to set up a time management program. It is very easy for you to get so involved in your campaign that you work on it way too much. Not only will you get burned out rather quickly, but you will only set yourself up for potential disaster if you aren’t anywhere near as successful as you want to be.

2. Choosing Affiliate Products

There is no shortage of companies that offer Affiliate programs. It is important to choose a couple of products that are related to each other in some way, but that you can be passionate about promoting. If your heart isn’t in it, you aren’t likely to get very far. That said, once you have an idea of which products that you want to market, you need to make sure that you are researching EVERYTHING. You should check out the company to make sure that it is legitimate, and you should be researching the product to learn as much about it as you can. Establishing yourself as an expert in the field is an important aspect of Affiliate marketing.

3. Promotion

The key to a successful Affiliate marketing campaign is promotion. Without the right kinds of promotion, you have no profits because you have no one buying anything. How are people supposed to know that you are offering something that they might need? There are many different ways that you can promote your product. First, you should set up a website. Then you can start a blog that provides readers with important information related to your product. After you set up a website and blog, you can look into other ways to promote your product, like article marketing and classified ads. You can also purchase ad space on other people’s website through Google’s programs. In the beginning, it is a good idea to limit your promotional efforts to the free methods. Once you have started generating a semi-steady income you can start getting into paid promotions, like pay-per-click advertising.

4. Research

It cannot be stressed enough about researching everything. You should have done some thorough research in the beginning when you are choosing your Affiliate product, but you also need to continue researching things. You should be performing regular research on the popularity of your products, search engine ranks and keywords.

Finding the right niche seems like a daunting task for many newcomers. There are so many different markets in Internet marketing that it is easy to see why there is such a huge turnaround. The problem is that a lot of beginners don’t know what to look for and wind up picking a niche that they cannot possibly be successful with. Just because a niche exists doesn’t mean that each marketer is ideal for working with it. When you are trying to find the right niche, there are a few tips that you can keep in mind.

First, you need to resort to the trusty pen and paper. Start making a list of areas that interest you. Let’s say that you have a particular fondness for self-help products. Start with the self-help topic and then pick individual aspects of self-help, like meditation and brain wave therapy. These are niches within a larger topic area. The idea is to get as specific as you can. From there, you can go even further into the specific things that can be used in those small niche groups, like meditation e-books or brain wave therapy CDs. Get as small down the line as you can.

Your next tip in finding the right niche is to pay attention to your potential competition. Think about the general concept of marketing in relation to supply and demand. Let’s say that there is a lot of demand created for a specific niche that you are interested in. That’s great, but how many other marketers are working to promote within that niche? While you may have some luck with going past them in your efforts, the likelihood is slim. This is because the niche is overworked. You need a niche that has a high demand but not too many other marketers involved in the promotion. The best way to find out this information is to do some quick keyword research using a research tool (Google serves the purpose here) and find out how popular the main topic keywords are for that particular niche. When the search rates are lower than 1000, you have found a really great target niche. You have a greater chance of creating a successful marketing campaign for that particular niche.

Your final tip is research, research, research. Once you have narrowed down your selection to one or two niche groups, you need to conduct some thorough research. You need to research the products or services that you think you might want to market to ensure that you are promoting something legitimate, but even more than that you need to gather information that you can share with your potential customers. When you know all there is to know about what you are trying to get people to buy, you convey yourself as an expert and people tend to put a little more faith in you over someone else. In the same manner, you should also research effective Internet marketing techniques. You may have some experience, but the Internet is always evolving and things can change overnight. For beginners, it is much easier to have an idea of what you are getting into before you actually dive in head first and wind up drowning up because you are lost.

Finding the right keywords for your web content is important. You can’t choose just anything that pops into your head. Your keywords must be related to your topic, and it is a good idea to choose heavily searched keywords. The keywords that you use in your content are only one piece of the SEO puzzle, but nonetheless, it is an important one. Search engines rely on keywords in content to provide readers with what they are looking for. Without the proper keywords, it is likely that you will not get a lot of traffic to your web pages. Keeping that in mind, you need to know how to find the right keywords for your content.

Finding the right keywords for your content is all about research. You need to choose the topics that are related to your product or service. You can split keywords into three different areas: irrelevant or unused, perfect or over-used. Irrelevant or unused keywords are generally a “must-don’t” with content creation. If you were to use these types of keywords, it is extremely likely that your content won’t get seen at all. You want to stay away from the over-used keywords too. These keywords have been used so many times and are so common that search engines almost always ignore them. Over-used keywords often fall into the “too general” category, like flowers or cats. You ideally want to set your sights on the perfect keywords. These are the ones that nail the topic right in the keywords. For example, you could say “transplanting Hibiscus flowers” or “giving cats a bath.” You want to be specific but not so specific that you give everything away. You simply have to take the idea of your content and sum it up into a phrase of three to five important words.

When you are doing your keyword research, keep in mind that there are a few easy flags that can help you determine how good or bad a keyword or phrase is. Ideally, you want keywords that are being used regularly. These are known as active keywords. In the same breath, however, you don’t want to have too much competition for specific keywords. Let’s say that you pick a specific set of keywords that you would like to use in a post. When you do your own search with those keywords in parentheses (so you get an exact match) the results show that there are over one million pages with those exact words. This is a big no-no. There is way too much competition for those keywords. You can take those same keywords and make a few small changes and come up with a few thousand results. Try to include common misspellings as well; not everyone remembers “i before e, except after c” and other such things.

It is often a good idea, especially for beginners, to use suggestion tools to find the right keywords. Many of these tools are free. With quite a few, you can type in keywords and get details on just how used those keywords really are. Through trial and error, you can easily create the right combination of keywords to make your content stand out and work to increase your page rankings with the search engines.

If you are actively seeking information about search engine optimization, you have likely already seen many references to the importance of keywords. The keywords that you choose are like the lifeline of your website or blog. It is the foundation for everything. Without a proper foundation, the structure caves in. It is important that you learn how to find the ideal keywords for your content. If your keyword choices are even slightly off from the topic, your page rankings suffer immensely. This is where keyword research comes in.

Let’s say, for example, that you are promoting a real estate e-book. Your website will have the specific e-book’s information and sales page, as well as information about you or your business and other basic stuff. Your blog, on the other hand, is a bit different. It is your blog posts that provide readers with more detailed information about your real estate e-book. It is your blog that will give your readers just a small taste of what the e-book contains so that they actually follow through and make the purchase. That said, you can’t just simply post a bunch of one-sided nonsense and hope for the best. Your posts must be well thought, researched and well written. Most marketing surveys have shown that a reader will visit the blog a few times to gather as much information as possible before actually making a purchase. Keywords come into play in a couple of different ways.

First, the right keywords in your content will get your readers to your particular blog post. Someone searches for a set of words that describes what they are looking for and then gets a results list. The second part to the keyword involvement is that the search engines will troll through the entire Internet, use the indexed pages that fall in with those particular keywords, and then display the sites in the results list. When your content is more relative to the keyword it is more likely that you will be high in the thousands and thousands of other pages in the results.

It is not an ingenious idea to pick just random keywords that you think may be somewhat relevant to your blog and your product. Your keywords must be research thoroughly. This doesn’t mean that you pick keywords and then start digging for detailed definitions. It means that you need to choose popular keywords for your main keywords and then choose less popular keywords (yet still related to the main keywords) as your secondary keywords.

Let’s use the real estate e-book example again. You’ve established that your blog posts should be informative, yet you don’t have the slightest idea on what type of information that you should be posting. For the real estate e-book, since you are ultimately trying to promote this, you can include information about locating properties out of state or even on choosing the right mortgage and the differences between the types of real estate loans. For the keywords, you simply locate the information and then choose the keywords that you see appearing the most. Let’s say you are writing a post about what a balloon mortgage is. Your main keywords would appear as balloon mortgage because that is what people would search for, but you can also include variations, like define balloon mortgage or inflating mortgage finance charges.

Since keyword research is sometimes confusing and frustrating, many SEO professionals use some kind of keyword research tool. There are both free and paid versions that differ only by the features they provide. For beginners, it is often recommended that you choose a keyword research tool that provides you with the top choices for keyword suggestions, as well as the secondary keyword suggestions. My suggestion for free tools would be the Google Keyword Tool and Traffic Travis. If you got some money left, Market Samurai should definitely be the choice. They have a 40 day free full functional trial.

Deciding not to use an SEO professional for your website is a big step. It means that you now have to figure it all out on your own. Once you start researching, you can easily become confused and overwhelmed by the sheer volume of SEO information you find. Search Engine Optimization encompasses several areas, and it is much easier to break them down and deal with each area individually.

Let’s start with the design of your web pages. Professionalism is crucial. Your overall design should portray seriousness, but still be unique. Avoid using flashy colors and loud detailing. Simple designs are preferred by both readers and search engines.

Your text formatting is also a part of the design of your web pages, and your text format should be simple as well. Use a common font, like Times New Roman or Arial. Put your titles in bold print. Keep your text size average, between 10 and 12 point.

The next area is the content of your web pages. When you are writing your content, write for the readers not the search engines. Your content should make sense and follow a logical flow. Content should stay on topic and be related to your website’s purpose. Write as though you are speaking to someone directly; be war, and inviting.

Tied in with content are the keywords that you use. Keywords are one of the most important things for search engines. The keywords that you use should be relevant but also thoroughly researched. Your main keywords need to be highly searched while your secondary keywords should be relevant to your main keywords. Use the main keywords in the title, in the first 50 words, and the evenly throughout the rest of the content’s body. Secondary keywords should be spread throughout evenly. It is important not to misuse or over-use keywords. Maintain a 1.5% to 2% density range.

As with all other aspects, tags are important. The tags help search engines index your page content better. Header tags (H1, H2, etc.) are basically just heading levels and the specific keywords that you use in those levels. The main title of the page is the H1 level.
Subtitles are in the levels that follow. Tags are actually quite similar to using the keywords themselves. Main keywords should be included within the H1 tags. Secondary keywords can be used in the subtitle header tags.

Linking in an aspect found in both on-page SEO and off-page SEO. With on-page SEO, linking revolves around the internal and external URLs that you have included in your pages. For the internal links, you are simply linking one page to another within your website, while external links are the ones that you provide that lead readers to other sites, like maybe another website that you own, a blog, or even a partner site. With off-page SEO, the linking is actually referring to back linking. What this means is that you are providing links to your site-to a specific page-through external means. Back linking is often done through article marketing and submission sites, social networking, and posting classified ads. Quality links help put your web pages in the radar of the search engines.

When it comes to SEO, every aspect needs the same amount of attention. Unfortunately, SEO efforts fail when people don’t have enough information to do things right. It’s better to start fresh, when you first set up a website. If you have your website up and running, however, it’s not too late; you just need to create an effective SEO campaign.

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is vital to the success of a website or blog. In simple terms, you are looking to create optimal conditions within your pages for search engines and how you rank with them. This, in turn, determines how visible your website is to readers. When it comes to your website and potential profits, flying through by the seat of your pants isn’t that great of a plan. There are many SEO services out there. Unfortunately, although there are a few services that work, most fall way too short of their promises. Instead of taking such a huge risk with your business, you can use an SEO software program and take charge of your own SEO efforts. There are two types of SEO software: Off-page and On-page.

Off-page SEO Software

Off-page SEO software can be a bit more helpful than on-page SEO software. With off-page optimizing, the software builds two way and in-bound links to help improve your website’s link popularity. It works to manage pay-per-click advertising and directory submissions. The off-page SEO software also uses anchor text for links that are keyword rich.

On-page SEO Software

In comparison, on-page SEO software deals specifically with optimizing the content of your web pages. On-page SEO software deals with your title and Meta tags, as well as other important tags like the H1 and H2 tags. Keyword density and internal links are maintained.

Choosing Your SEO Software

The coveted ranking spot within search engine results is the first page. Websites listed on the first page are the most relevant based on the keywords used. Studies have shown that the majority of readers will not go any further than the first page when searching for something. Your SEO software should help your website reach this rank. That said, there are five criteria to consider for choosing SEO software.

1. Your Computer’s Operating System

Obviously, an SEO software program only for Linux won’t work with Windows. You would be wasting money of you purchased one that doesn’t work on your computer. Always check the software’s compatibility with your operating system.

2. Available Functions

What exactly does the SEO software provide? Ideal SEO software will give you a broad range of tools to handle each aspect of optimization. Focus on specific areas of optimizing that you know to have issues and choose software that provides the tools needed to repair those issues.

3. Ease of Use

How complicated is the software? Regardless of whether you’re a newbie or an SEO expert, the SEO software that you choose shouldn’t have you staring at your screen and scratching your head in confusion. The ideal SEO software is easy enough for a beginner to use but still provides advanced options for experts.

4. Extras

What extra features does the SEO software have? While not all software provides any extras, some versions will give you access to a select few additional ones. Most commonly you can find that many SEO software versions can supply you with detailed reporting.

5. Cost

Ultimately, it all comes down to cost. You don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for SEO software. The market is highly competitive, so prices will vary depending on the previous four criteria. When you have more comprehensive SEO software, you can expect a higher price. Keep in mind that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Email marketing has been used as a marketing technique for many years. It is considered to be the electronic equivalent to mailing circulars and newsletters to businesses and homes. For your professional needs, email marketing can be a valuable asset. If you plan your campaign properly, you can build an extensive network which is extremely beneficial to your business and its profits.

Your first step is to start building your email marketing list. The first addition to your list will be your current and previous customers. As you receive requests for information, add these emails to your list. If you’re smart about how you draw your emails, you will have an extensive list started in a short period. You can also choose to purchase email contact lists from marketing companies based on your target criteria.

Your next step is to add an opt-in form on your website and/or blog. This opt-in is a great way to capture email addresses for your campaign. You can offer registration for updates and special offers. Your opt-in should be visible to visitors, ideally located at the top or middle of the web page.

Newsletters are a good way to draw in customers for email marketing. Visitors will come to your site and see that you offer a newsletter, by subscription, directly to their email inbox. Your newsletter should be completely relevant to your product or service and a new one should be sent regularly. You can send a new newsletter weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

Make sure that the email messages you create for your email marketing campaign are written and designed well. Provide well-researched information. Avoid being too technical and confusing. Balance the messages evenly between relevant information and promoting what you’re offering. You should focus more on the quality of your message instead of trying to hard sell something.

Your subject line is a crucial part of any messages you use in email marketing. The subject line is the first thing readers see. If your subject line does not entice a reader, it will go straight into the trash bin without being read.

The structure of your email messages is also important. Your messages should be easy on the eyes. Avoid messy clutter. Simple designs are always better. If you include images, they should also be simple, so they load quickly. Make sure that your messages provide your contact information and a logo if you have one.

Finally, spruce up your email marketing lists regularly. Remove any addresses that don’t work. You should also remove any email addresses immediately after receiving a request to do so. Don’t fret over losing the contacts. They can be replaced quickly and easily.

Email marketing doesn’t take a lot of upkeep. The initial effort will take more time than any of it. If you take the time to set things up properly from the beginning, your success will come much easier as time passes. There is a broad range of tools and software programs that can help you with your effort in making your email marketing campaign work for you the way that you want.
